Stone Conservation

Stone conservation is as much about judgement as it is about craft.

From modest repairs to major restoration, we work carefully with historic and contemporary stone buildings to stabilise, repair and protect them for the long term.

Drawing on generations of masonry experience and modern conservation techniques, our teams treat each project with the same patience, respect and attention to detail.

CARE FOR HISTORIC AND NATURAL STONE

Every building and stone type tells a different story.

We conserve and repair limestone, sandstone, granite, marble, terracotta and travertine, working across churches, estates, civic buildings and listed properties.

Our experience includes Listed structures and projects for clients such as English Heritage, the National Trust and other custodians.

Whether the need is cleaning, repairs, repointing or a broader maintenance strategy, we focus on preserving as much original fabric as possible while returning the building to sound condition.

Process Details

Design

DESIGN

Our service includes the structural design of the stone assembly, including the connecting brackets where necessary, and also drawing the geometry in 3D.

FABRICATION

Using our state-of-the-art factory and machinery we can make the treads to any shape and detail you require.

Survey, diagnosis and strategy

Survey, diagnosis and strategy

We begin with a careful assessment of the building and its stone. This may include visual surveys, condition reports and discussions with architects or conservation officers. We identify the causes of deterioration – from weathering and salts to past repairs or pollution – and develop a conservation strategy that balances significance, risk, budget and access, always aiming to retain historic integrity wherever possible.

Trials, specification and planning

Trials, specification and planning

Before full works proceed, we agree the right techniques and materials. This can include cleaning trials using DOFF, JOS/TORC or approved stone-safe agents, sample mortar mixes with colour matching, and mock-ups of piece repairs versus mortar repairs. From this, we prepare detailed specifications and programmes so everyone understands the proposed approach, extent of intervention and expected outcomes.

Conservation works and ongoing care

Our NVQ-qualified site masons and conservation teams then carry out the agreed works: cleaning, stone repairs, replacements, piece repairs, repointing and associated detailing. Throughout, we monitor the effect of our interventions and adjust where necessary in consultation with the professional team. On completion, we can advise on maintenance and inspection regimes to help the building continue to perform and weather well over time.

PROTECTING STONE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

From the choice between a localised mortar repair and a new indented stone, to the selection of pointing mortars and cleaning methods, every action has a long-term impact on the building.

By combining technical understanding, careful material selection and skilled handwork, we help ensure that significant stone structures remain safe, stable and beautiful – not just today, but for the generations who will come after.
