Hampshire Residence
At a private residence in Eversley, a grand bifurcated staircase in Moleanos Beige stone sets the tone from the moment you enter.
AFJONES designed and installed stone cladding to a steel stair structure and coordinated matching flooring throughout the ground floor to create a calm, unified interior.
STONE FLOORS AND
STAIR INTEGRATED
GRAND BIFURCATED
STAIRCASE
The central feature of the project is a sweeping bifurcated staircase, where two flights rise from a shared lower run to meet at a generous landing.
Moleanos Beige stone was chosen for its soft tone and fine grain, giving the stair a refined presence without overpowering the space.
STONE-CLAD STRUCTURE, NOT CANTILEVERED
Rather than a cantilevered structure, the stair is formed from a supporting frame clad in stone.
Each tread and riser, typically 20mm thick, was made bespoke to suit the curved geometry, with bullnose treads and matching risers carefully detailed and fitted over the steelwork. The result shows how a well-designed stone-clad staircase can be just as impactful as a fully structural stone stair.
A CONSISTENT MATERIAL
PALETTE
To carry the language of the stair through the home, Moleanos Beige stone was also supplied and fitted across the ground floor living areas.
Using the same material for floors and stair ties circulation spaces together and reinforces the sense of continuity from the entrance hall into the rest of the house.
TAILORED CLADDING FOR COMPLEX GEOMETRIES
FLOORS DESIGNED FOR
EVERYDAY USE
Cladding a bifurcated stair of this complexity requires precise templating, setting-out and fabrication.
AFJONES developed each element to suit the underlying frame, managing joints, nosings and transitions so the stone reads as a continuous, well-resolved surface.
COORDINATION WITH FRAME
AND FINISHES
The Moleanos flooring was detailed and installed with daily life in mind, balancing elegance with durability and ease of maintenance.
Joints, thresholds and interfaces with joinery were all considered so that the stone could support a variety of uses while maintaining a coherent look.
STONEWORK THAT GROUNDS
THE HOME
Together, the staircase and flooring give the residence a sense of quiet formality at the entrance and a consistent material character throughout.
The project demonstrates how stone can be used to create impact without excess, relying on proportion, tone and careful execution rather than overt decoration.
This scheme highlights AFJONES’ ability to work with both structural and clad stair solutions, advising on what is appropriate for each context.
By bringing design input, fabrication and installation under one roof, the team were able to deliver stonework that feels tailored to the architecture and ready to support the way the house will be used for years to come.
RESOURCES &
Education
