Stone Fireplaces and Hearths

A stone fireplace will anchor a room, set its tone, and often become the element around which the rest of the space is arranged.

Whether quietly understated or a clear focal point, we design and make fireplaces that feel proportioned and are built to last.

Drawing on more than 160 years of masonry experience, each surround and hearth is crafted in our Oxfordshire workshops, then installed by specialist masons who combine traditional skills with modern best practice.

CLASSICAL ENTRANCES IN NATURAL STONE

FIREPLACES SHAPED IN NATURAL STONE

We create surrounds and hearths in a wide range of English and imported limestones – including Bath, Portland, Clipsham and Cadeby – as well as granites and slates for hearths where additional durability or contrast is required.

Whether the project calls for a classical chimneypiece or a more contemporary, minimal design, we work with a variety of designs and will define the style, geometry, detailing and stone selection, always with clear guidance on practicality, maintenance and cost.

Concept, Feasibility and Stone Selection

Concept, Feasibility and Stone Selection

We begin by understanding the desired architectural language: classical proportions, minimalist forms, or bespoke sculptural designs. From there, we advise on stone type, practicality, jointing, supporting structure and cost implications. Early involvement ensures the fireplace integrates seamlessly with the room’s construction and meets performance requirements for the selected fire type.

Design Development and Workshop Preparation

Design Development and Workshop Preparation

Once the direction and materials are agreed, we refine the design. Opening sizes, shelf depths, mouldings, joints and hearth layouts are all carefully set out, coordinated with flue and fire requirements. Detailed drawings and setting-out information are produced for our Ipsden workshops, where each component is cut, profiled and hand-finished to the agreed specification, ready for installation.

Our experienced masonry teams then install the fireplace and hearth on site, working closely with the chosen fire installer or contractor. Levels are checked, joints are aligned and any slips or additional detailing are fitted to ensure safe operation and correct airflow. Once complete, we carry out final finishing, provide guidance on care and maintenance, and leave the fireplace ready to become part of everyday life.

CENTREPIECES FOR ROOMS THAT GATHER PEOPLE

A well-designed fireplace will feel effortless but is always the result of careful planning, material understanding and skilled craftsmanship.

By using a combination of traditional finishing techniques with modern production methods, we’re able to deliver fireplaces and hearths that are built to last and add lasting architectural value to a project.
