Heritage
Heritage projects demand sensitivity, patience and a respect for the original fabric of a building.
For over 160 years, heritage conservation work has been a part of our history.
Working on listed properties to major estates for clients such as the National Trust and English Heritage.
We are trusted to repair and conserve stonework that carries cultural and emotional significance, always working in a way that respects original design and materials.
RESPECTING THE PAST IN STONE
CONSERVATION WITH CARE
Understanding comes before intervention.
Careful surveys, assessment of decay mechanisms and a knowledge of historic mortars allow us to determine whether cleaning, mortar repair or stone replacement is appropriate.
This early understanding protects original fabric and ensures that repairs are proportionate, necessary and respectful of the building’s history.
SPECIALISTS IN HISTORIC FABRIC
Conservation relies on collaboration.
We work closely with conservation architects, surveyors and specialist trades to plan repairs that balance heritage value with long-term performance. Whether addressing failed ashlar, stabilising balustrades or rebuilding weathered architectural details, every decision is developed in dialogue.
This coordinated approach helps ensure that new stone, mortars and techniques integrate seamlessly with the existing building and its intended character.
BUILDINGS FOR TOMORROW
Our masons carry skills that have been passed down through generations, using traditional hand techniques alongside modern tools and technical insight.
This combination allows us to repair and replace historic stone with accuracy and empathy, ensuring new work settles naturally into its setting without disrupting the character of the original building.
ON-GOING SUPPORT
Heritage conservation is often not solved with a single intervention. Regular maintenance and small, timely repairs often have the greatest impact on a building’s long-term health.
We work with clients to establish appropriate maintenance plans and carry out the necessary works with minimal disruption, helping historic structures age safely and steadily.
CLEANING AND PRESERVATION
Cleaning historic stone requires restraint and an understanding of how each material responds. We assess the condition of surfaces and use only sensitive, approved methods such as DOFF steam cleaning, TORC, or specialist stone-safe treatments.
These techniques remove pollutants and staining without harming the original fabric, helping buildings recover their clarity while preserving the patina that gives them character.
