Natural Stone Porticos

A stone portico changes the way a building arrives.

Whether classical or contemporary, a well-considered portico becomes part of the architecture.

Drawing on classical precedents and our experience in structural stone, we design and build porticos that feel rooted in tradition yet tailored precisely to the facade they live amoungst.

CLASSICAL ENTRANCES IN NATURAL STONE

Most successful porticos are built on disciplined proportion.

We work with time-honoured classical orders – Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan and Composite – adjusting column slenderness, spacing, entablature depth and detailing to suit the façade. Columns are carefully entasised, tapering subtly through their height to achieve the correct visual balance.

From simple two-column porches to more formal four-column arrangements with pilasters, steps and ashlar, we guide you through options, explaining the aesthetic, practical and cost implications of each.

PROCESS Details

Design

DESIGN

Our service includes the structural design of the stone assembly, including the connecting brackets where necessary, and also drawing the geometry in 3D.

Fabrication

FABRICATION

Using our state-of-the-art factory and machinery we can make the treads to any shape and detail you require.

Installation

INSTALLATION

With a bit of forethought and provision of temporary lifting beams, the installation process becomes a relatively smooth and simple process.

Concept Development and Architectural Coordination

Concept Development and Architectural Coordination

Successful porticos begin with proportion and geometry. We work with architects and contractors to define column spacing, entasis, capital profiles and cornice details, developing schemes that sit comfortably within their architectural context. Early input helps ensure structural feasibility and coordinated foundations for the project. We can also discuss budget and timeline implications here.

Detailed design and stone selection

Detailed design and stone selection

Once the preferred arrangement is agreed, we refine the design in detail. As we are independent of any single quarry or supplier, we can offer impartial advice on stone choice, considering colour, texture, durability and how the portico will weather over time. Drawings and 3D models are prepared to give clarity before manufacture begins.

Workshop Production

Workshop Production

Component pieces are manufactured in our Oxfordshire workshops using a blend of CNC technology and hand finishing. Each element is checked for accuracy, and dry runs can be carried out where appropriate.

On site, our teams work on fixings and sequencing which are coordinated with the contractor to ensure smooth delivery and structural reliability. The result is a portico that sits naturally on a building and reads as one coherent composition.

A LASTING STATEMENT

A well-designed stone portico does more than add kerb appeal.

It can increase the value of a property, provide shelter and transition at the threshold, and tie together new and existing elements of a façade.

Whether part of a new build or an enhancement to an existing home, our porticos are conceived as long-term additions – proportioned carefully, detailed with restraint and constructed with the same attention to logistics and craftsmanship that underpins all our stonework.
